Job Responsibilities:

  • Recommends local public health policies.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates and  directs the work program of a County Health Department.
  • Directs and coordinates the inspection, investigation, legal and other measures required to  carry out the provisions of local and state health laws.
  • Supervises sanitation measures and inspections throughout the County.
  • Maintains a current, accurate record of all diseases reported within the municipality.
  • Investigates and/or directs the investigation of contacts and contagious diseases.  As is provided for in the health ordinance issues certain licenses and permits.  Inspects and/or supervises the inspection of food and drug establishments to assure  compliance with the law.  Review proposed State Environmental Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Develop Local Health and Environmental legislation for local governing bodies. i.e. Boards  of Health and Township Committees.  Direct the enforcement process of environmental court actions, criminal prosecution and  coordinate with New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and Sussex County Prosecutor’s  office when necessary.
  • Program responsibilities include:  Environmental Health, Public Health Nursing, Chest Clinic, Mosquito Control, Medical Examiner, Fire Marshall, Special Child Health Services, County Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Unit, County Bioterrorism Program, Right to Know Program, Clean Communities Program, and Community Environmental Health Act (CEHA) Program.

Garden State Environmental, Inc, Environmental Specialist Internship

Garden State Environmental, Inc. (GSE) is an environmental, health and safety (EHS) consulting firm, in business since 1985. We have an immediate opening for an Environmental Specialist Intern. This entry-level part-time position offers an exciting opportunity to learn about the EHS field and to obtain practical hands-on experience. Work involves conducting field investigations including testing and collecting environmental samples to evaluate indoor air quality, water intrusion, mold, asbestos and related environmental health issues.

This position will start as a paid Internship with an initial average of 25 hours per week expected. GSE will provide intensive training through working directly with, and being mentored by seasoned EHS and Industrial Hygiene professionals. GSE will also pay for additional continuing education classes to supplement GSE training that may result in the Intern obtaining certain professional certifications or licenses. If the Internship is successful, this position may lead to full time employment.

The position requires routine travel to our client locations throughout NJ, metro NY and eastern PA. Some overnight travel and weekend work may be occasionally required. Flexibility in working from home office is possible. All expenses will be paid by GSE.

Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree in a scientific or related field. Some experience in conducting environmental inspections and a basic understanding of building construction is desired, but not required. We are looking for a bright hard working grad who can take direction and who has a strong interest in getting started in this varied and growing field.
